Actually, this isn’t so much a discussion on why religion does or does not deserve special privileges, but rather it’s just my way of gently introducing two YouTube channels related to atheism and religion. But I will say this, and which I’ve mentioned briefly in another article, religion does not deserve any special privileges; it is not immune to criticism and I will object to any laws or “politically correct” influences that seek to protect religion or not cause “offence”. Any “offences” that religious people feel, I think, may be the result of a deep split within their personalities where their rational-self is trying to get to the surface but is pushed back down by the irrational-self. This battle probably goes unnoticed by the person but if they really thought about it they may perhaps know that there’s something not quite right. And rather than explore and understand and admit that they are wrong they, instead, lash out at the external, the rationalists, the critical thinkers. They want this nice, cosy world that they’ve built around themselves and are afraid to venture out, afraid to grow-up, afraid to confront reality. This may be something that will form part of a rather longer article but I fear that I may just end up repeating some, if not all, of the points made by Richard Dawkins in “The God Delusion”. But I do still think that it may be a worthwhile activity to see where it leads me; I may even be surprised! However, I digress.

I came across these two YouTube channels and really enjoyed them. Some may be offended. Tough.

Bad Astronomy blog article – When a biologist teaches creationism

Or where they always bad? Anyway, sad and bad. Science-based classes need to teach science. And religions taught in classes on religion. Or is that too simple?

The Northern Ireland Culture Minister Nelson McCausland comes under the withering gaze of PharyngulaNorthern Ireland culture is apparently cuckoo. Hilarious!

I suppose that it’s inevitable to get the odd person in some responsible position. But it does allow one to start questioning the judgment of those that put these people into such positions.

The deceptions, immorality and, I would add, criminal acts of discredited doctor Andrew Wakefield laid bare at http://tallguywrites.livejournal.com/148012.htmlThe Facts In The Case Of Dr. Andrew Wakefield”.The media doesn’t come out looking good either. Neither does Jim Carrey. Or Jenny McCarthy.

Remember, there are a lot of misguided, ignorant and evil people around. A lot of people got hurt. So be careful out there.

Thanks to Bad Astronomy.

Idiot educators?

A Panda’s Thumb article “Why science literacy is in trouble” discusses how a Canadian Assistant Professor of Science Education (Katarin MacLeod, Assistant Professor in Science Education at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, NS) deliberately(?) misleads by, for example, stating that evolution is only a “theory” for which there is not much evidence otherwise it would be called a “law”. There is much strong scientific evidence for evolution and, in fact, such evidence has become increasing stronger with enhancements made to the original discussions put forward by Charles Darwin. Katarin MacLeod would perhaps apply her silly argument to the “Theory of Relativity” and argue that there isn’t much evidence for Relativity. Only those who are uncomfortable with evolution, such as creationists, make an effort to discredit evolution.

The Panda’s Thumb article “Why science literacy is in trouble” actually links to a Woo Fighters article “There Must Be an Idiom”. This article has a very good YouTube video of an interview with Genie Scott which I’ve included here…it explains what “theory” really means (go to 03:47 minutes):

It’s clear…Katarin MacLeod is dead wrong.

A recent article at Pharyngula reports that the American Academy of Pediatrics has compromised itself with its “political correctness gone wrong” decision. Such accommodationist principles will NOT make mutilation stop but will, instead, help to legitimise the barbaric practices of Female Genital Mutilation (or FGM)..

My position is clear…a child should not be subjected to body mutilations, or modifications if you prefer, unless for strong medication reasons. Yes, this extends to male circumcision too, and the “”it is cleaner” is not justification enough. This is human rights violation. When a child becomes an adult they can do what they want with their bodies without undue interference from parents/society/traditions; but until then these barbaric practices, these barbaric traditions, these barbaric rituals must be fought. No compromise.

At Pharyngula’s blog I came across his article:

Sunday Sacrilege: Prometheus’ sin
http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2010/05/sunday_sacrilege_prometheus_si.php

Then I clicked on the video:

Pharyngula was right. Horrific. I would add that this is an abuse against humanity, the indoctrination of children with falsehoods and prejudicing them against reason and critical thinking.
