Today is 13th April. On this day in 1949 the late great Christopher Hitchens was born. I thought I’d share one of his many quotes:

Many religions now come before us with ingratiating smirks and outspread hands, like an unctuous merchant in a bazaar. They offer consolation and solidarity and uplift, competing as they do in a marketplace. But we have a right to remember how barbarically they behaved when they were strong and were making an offer that people could not refuse.

I’d previously put up a video link from JediJesseSs to “Christopher Hitchens – The Best of the Hitchslap”. And I’ve just seen that Part 2 has now been uploaded. Both videos are shown below:

Hitchens and his works have had a great influence on my life and I have enjoyed his brilliant oratory and debating skills; a master polemicist, seeing a “Hitchslap” brought much enjoyment. His battle against cancer had hardly diminished the man’s prodigious output of work, but the effects on his body were clear.

There was some hope, some signs, that the treatments that he was receiving might just be successful. But in one of his recent articles “Trial of the Will” in Vanity Fair, where some of the effects of these treatments were described, Hitchens details his fears of losing the core of what he lives for; his ability to write and argue. It seemed that he might just be slipping away. The sad news was announced today. His legacy of work continues and will be built upon by future generations.

Hitchens will be missed and I offer my condolences to his friends and family.

A quote from Christopher Hitchens during his debate with David Berlinksi:

“[All religions] make the same mistake. They all take the only real faculty we have that distinguishes us from other primates, and from other animals—the faculty of reason, and the willingness to take any risk that reason demands of us—and they replace that with the idea that faith is a virtue.  If I could change just one thing, it would be to dissociate the idea of faith from virtue—now and for good—and to expose it for what it is: a servile weakness, a refuge in cowardice, and a willingness to follow, with credulity, people who are in the highest degree unscrupulous.” – Christopher Hitchens
