A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine mentioned that they wanted to go to Borneo, and I was quite interested in going to Mongolia (which I have been for what seems like ages now!). Anyway, another friend of mine just came back from the Galapagos and we had a chat last week about places to go and after making the necessary arrangements I’m now going to Borneo in March 2008.Orangutan image

The Borneo trip is on the Malaysian side and is actually in support of the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. There are a number of activities planned and I plan to do every single one of those including cycling, jungle treks, rafting, canopy walking, etc

There’s a lot that has gone wrong and is going wrong in Borneo. From the forest fires, palm oil plantations, logging, etc. Some of these are illegal activities but some are not such as the disastrous initiative when farmers were encouraged into the area by the Indonesian government. The forests and their biodiversity are being devastated. I fully understand the economic pressures faced by the locals. It’s not going to be something that will be easy to fix.

I decided that I wanted to help as well as satisfy my need to travel. So the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre got my vote with the Borneo Orangutan Adventure Appeal. I hope to raise some awareness with my friends and colleagues and perhaps reach out to a larger audience through the Internet. As you may know I am a keen hobbyist photographer (see my Antarctica photos from last month) and I intend to produce photos that highlight the richness of Borneo but also, at the same time, bring to people’s attention the situation regarding the plight of the orangutans and the forests.

I just hope my other friend doesn’t get upset that I’m off to Borneo! It’s something that just happened and I couldn’t pass it up. I’m still planning to do Mongolia later on this year…the year is still young so still lots to do!

People. Let’s be careful out there. The planet needs us.

Ninja StarWhoa! NinjaTrek.com is up and running. At the moment I’m using it to test for ways of making a more interactive website using commonly available tools. It does mean, though, that more system resources will be utilised.

I’ve uploaded photos from MetalVortex.com to NinjaTrek.com. I’ve got a number of plans for NinjaTrek.com. Not sure which way it will go.

[update: most of the links below are now out of date. But all the photos can now be found at http://www.metalvortex.com/images/Misc Photos/Matharu/]

OK, this is a bit of a vanity post but some people have asked for photos of me so I’ve gone through my published photos and have collated the links here. Someone also accused me of not smiling in my photos…you judge! I think you’ll find that most of the pre-2001 photos are of low quality as I hadn’t taken up photography as a hobby until 2001 and I’ve only got low resolution scans of the old photos.

I recently went on one of those Antarctic cruises in December 2007 spending Christmas out there. The cruise included zodiac landings on the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsular. Of course I took lots of photos and I’ll need time to sort through them and start putting them online…it will take me months! I’ll provide an update when the first series of photos goes online.

Apart from witnessing the amazing scenery and wildlife I made loads of fantastic friends most of whom were single and well travelled people like me…it wasn’t what I was expecting at all! We all had real fun and I miss them all!

One or two persons, with their enthusiasm, energy and kindness, reminded me that there is still so much goodness and joy in this world and that perhaps the world isn’t as doomed as I sometimes imagine. I suppose I’ve spent too much time recently looking at just the negatives and using my blog for criticism that I had almost lost perspective. Too many rants and not enough raves.

I now remember why I started travelling in the first place; to meet people and immerse oneself in various cultures, to be alive and enjoy the wonders of this world! It’s now a New Year…a time for reflection and a refreshed outlook. I’m looking forward to it! So thank you all!

Best. Trip. EVAH!

A trip from the Atacama Desert of northern Chile to the cold, wet and windswept lands of Patagonia in Chile and Argentina.

Arid, desolate, lunar landscapes and high‑altitude volcanoes and geysers of the Atacama Desert. The busy streets of Santiago and the surrounding pleasant vineyards. The beautiful Pacific coastal towns of Vina del Mar and Valparaiso. The pioneering feel of the small towns of Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales and El Calafate. The awe‑inspiring majestic peaks and glaciers of Torres del Paine. The huge glaciers of Upsala and Spegazzini, the slow break‑up of Perito Moreno glacier, and iceberg‑littered lakes. The charms of the Tierra del Fuego town of Ushuaia and the wilds of the estancias. Glorious seafood, spit-roasted lamb, huge beef steaks. The music, dance and passion of Tango, and the splendour of Buenos Aires. Nice one!

Have a look at the South America 2006 Photo Gallery. Enjoy!

I’ve just seen the documentary “Born into Brothels”. I was drawn to the documentary due to its angle on the use of cameras, and I like taking photos!

The documentary is about photographer Zana Briski and her efforts with the children of prostitutes in Kolkata (Calcutta), how she befriended them, and how their lives were affected when Zana gave a camera to each of the kids.

It’s inspirational, sad and heart-warming. I definitely recommend that you purchase the DVD which shows the actual documentary plus the follow-up with the kids three years later.

Some people have accused Zana of using this documentary as a vehicle to further her own personal ambitions. Others have stated that her efforts were miniscule and didn’t really attempt to solve the real problems that the kids faced. And others have also condemned this film because they believe that it was undeserving for being an Academy Awards winner.

But don’t let these criticisms deflect you. These are pure distractions. Go get the DVD and enjoy seeing a small part of the kids’ lives.

The official website for the documentary is over at “Kids with Cameras” with the documentary details in the “Born into Brothels” section.
