Further to my recent article Chiropractor’s back off! at http://www.metalvortex.com/blog/2010/04/15/384.html regarding the British Chiropractic Association on their dropping the libel case against Simon Singh, I’ve came across an article from the excellent Ben Goldacre at http://www.badscience.net/2010/04/british-chiropractic-association-drops-shameful-libel-case-against-science-writer-who-criticised-them/ which goes into a bit more depth. Well worth a read.

There is another excellent article from Stuff and Nonsense at http://jdc325.wordpress.com/2010/04/01/simon-singh-and-the-british-chiropractic-association/

The Guardian has a very good article describing the sorry state that chiropractors have gotten into for making unsubstantiated and unsupportable medical claims; claims that Simon Singh rightly called “bogus”. The Guardian article is available at http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2010/mar/01/simon-singh-libel-case-chiropractors

Retired judge Sir Mota Singh, a Sikh, recently made some comments that Sikhs must be allowed to carry Kirpans (a ceremonial dagger or knife) and be exempt from the prohibitions that forbid the carrying of knives to such places as schools. In UK law, there some seem to be some specific exemptions for “religious reasons” including those relating to school ground but I’m not expert so don’t full understand their extent.

Singh says:

“I see no objection to a young Sikh girl or boy, who’s been baptised, being allowed to wear their Kirpan if that’s what they want to do”

Really? This guy is a judge?

I can see this becoming an issue when some kid uses his kirpan in a school fight. And it will also encourage others to carry knives.

No special privilege is required for religions, especially more so in this case as these so-called “symbols” are NOT essential to proving anyone’s alignment to some religious belief system. What is far more important than these symbols is how one treats others; to be fair and to do the right things which we all instinctively feel and aspire to.

spine reprinted from Sense About Science

Simon Singh is a science writer in London and the co-author, with Edzard Ernst, of Trick or Treatment? Alternative Medicine on Trial. This is an edited version of an article published in The Guardian for which Singh is being personally sued for libel by the British Chiropractic Association.

Beware the spinal trap

Some practitioners claim it is a cure-all, but the research suggests chiropractic therapy has mixed results – and can even be lethal, says Simon Singh.

You might be surprised to know that the founder of chiropractic therapy, Daniel David Palmer, wrote that ’99% of all diseases are caused by displaced vertebrae’. In the 1860s, Palmer began to develop his theory that the spine was involved in almost every illness because the spinal cord connects the brain to the rest of the body. Therefore any misalignment could cause a problem in distant parts of the body.

In fact, Palmer’s first chiropractic intervention supposedly cured a man who had been profoundly deaf for 17 years. His second treatment was equally strange, because he claimed that he treated a patient with heart trouble by correcting a displaced vertebra.

You might think that modern chiropractors restrict themselves to treating back problems, but in fact some still possess quite wacky ideas. The fundamentalists argue that they can cure anything, including helping treat children with colic, sleeping and feeding problems, frequent ear infections, asthma and prolonged crying – even though there is not a jot of evidence.

I can confidently label these assertions as utter nonsense because I have co-authored a book about alternative medicine with the world’s first professor of complementary medicine, Edzard Ernst. He learned chiropractic techniques himself and used them as a doctor. This is when he began to see the need for some critical evaluation. Among other projects, he examined the evidence from 70 trials exploring the benefits of chiropractic therapy in conditions unrelated to the back. He found no evidence to suggest that chiropractors could treat any such conditions.

But what about chiropractic in the context of treating back problems? Manipulating the spine can cure some problems, but results are mixed. To be fair, conventional approaches, such as physiotherapy, also struggle to treat back problems with any consistency. Nevertheless, conventional therapy is still preferable because of the serious dangers associated with chiropractic.

My view on chiropractic is simple…it has been shown that chiropractic is based on non-scientific ideas, and various studies and trials reinforce that position. In other words, trials indicate that chiropractic is "bogus".spine

The recent situation with Simon Singh has rattled my cage, so to speak, and I have included some links here regarding the current situation…which I see very much as a fight of reason against superstition and nonsense. Much like homeopathy and other pseudosciences, we need to be on the guard against the new witch doctors.

The truth may be puzzling. It may take some work to grapple with. It may be counterintuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consonant with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what’s true. We have a method, and that method helps us to reach not absolute truth, only asymptotic approaches to the truth – never there, just closer and closer, always finding vast new oceans of undiscovered possibilities. Cleverly designed experiments are the key. – Carl Sagan

The Quackometer has an article that describes William Alderson’s (ill-written) response to Ernst & Singh’s book "Trick or Treatment: Medicine on Trial".

[update: most of the links below are now out of date. But all the photos can now be found at http://www.metalvortex.com/images/Misc Photos/Matharu/]

OK, this is a bit of a vanity post but some people have asked for photos of me so I’ve gone through my published photos and have collated the links here. Someone also accused me of not smiling in my photos…you judge! I think you’ll find that most of the pre-2001 photos are of low quality as I hadn’t taken up photography as a hobby until 2001 and I’ve only got low resolution scans of the old photos.
