Further to  Atheism – A History of God (Part 1), Evid3nc3 has now posted Atheism: A History of God (Part 2). This video is one in a series that Evid3nc3 is doing that explains, in detail, his journey from being a devout Christian to becoming an atheist.

3.3.3 Atheism: A History of God (Part 2)

On a related topic, I stumbled across tenneral’s YouTube Channel. Tenneral used to be religious (a Roman Catholic convert) but has managed to break himself free from the shackles of religion. He has posted a number of rather delightful, witty and insightful videos which I’ve enjoyed immensely. One video in particular I’m still Appalled! discusses Peter de Rosa’s book “Vicars of Christ” which goes on to describe the various Roman Catholic popes who, for the most part, turn out to be rather odious people.

I’m still Appalled!

Christianity may not be as barbaric as it once was and has changed but, as Tenneral says, it hasn’t changed enough.

Another great video from DarkMatter2525:

Double Standard

I hope that people don’t misunderstand the message of the video but, then, this is the Internet.

Randi on Geller

James Randi on Uri Geller’s reversal:

James Randi on Uri Geller’s Reversal

Although I’ve heard it said that you shouldn’t kick a person who’s trying to apologies, it’s clear that Geller’s actions over the years have contributed in a big way to society’s muddled thinking and resulted in the encouragement of other crazies to exploit and scam. I actually have very little sympathy for those scientists who endorsed Geller’s physic claims; fool on you. But it is Geller’s other victim that I have sympathy for i.e. society’s capacity to reason.

If Geller wants to right wrongs then he needs to embark on an aggressive and earnest campaign to apologise, and perhaps contribute some of his earnings to real education. How about appearing on well-known talk shows to renounce and apologies? From what I’ve seen of him over the years, Geller will likely try to make himself look good and claim that it was all part of “his show”, his act to “entertain”. Just remember all those legal actions he took against anyone who even dared to cast doubt on Geller’s so-called psychic ability.

Having had a quick look around, I cannot find an unequivocal statement from Geller where he renounces his claims for having psychic or supernatural powers. The closest I can find is this from Wikipedia:

In 2007, skeptics observed that Geller appeared to have dropped his claims that he does not perform magic tricks. Randi highlighted a quotation from the November 2007 issue of the magazine Magische Welt (Magic World) in which Geller said: "I’ll no longer say that I have supernatural powers. I am an entertainer. I want to do a good show. My entire character has changed."

In a later interview, Geller told Telepolis, "I said to this German magazine, so what I did say, that I changed my character, to the best of my recollection, and I no longer say that I do supernatural things. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have powers. It means that I don’t say ‘it’s supernatural’, I say ‘I’m a mystifier!’ That’s what I said. And the sceptics turned it around and said, ‘Uri Geller said he’s a magician!’ I never said that."[41] In that interview, Geller further explained that when he is asked how he does his stunts, he tells children to "Forget the paranormal. Forget spoon bending! Instead of that, focus on school! Become a positive thinker! Believe in yourself and create a target! Go to university! Never smoke! And never touch drugs! And think of success!"

In February 2008, Geller stated in the TV show The Next Uri Geller (a German version of The Successor) that he did not have any supernatural powers, before winking to the camera.

I think that last lines tells it all.

Note: Randi’s video seems to have been uploaded in December 2009 although it appeared on my RSS feed today for some reason. What has happened with Geller over the last 12 months or so?

I rather like these older videos from Randi:

James Randi exposes Uri Geller – part 1 of 4

Bends keys? Or bends truth?

James Randi exposes Uri Geller – part 2 of 4

Cracking!

James Randi exposes Uri Geller – part 3 of 4

Blinding!

Bend it like Geller!

Many years ago on a management course I was introduced to the basics of Transactional Analysis (TA) and the roles of the ego states: Parent, Adult, Child. I think most people are taught these basic concepts on any introductory management course. I found this information very helpful in both the workplace environment and in my personal life. However, as in most things in life, a basic introduction to something as complicated as human behaviour likely requires reinforcement through further study to appreciate all the complexities and subtleties.

Recently I stumbled across three TA YouTube videos which, whilst still introductions, are well thought out, well presented and consequently extremely educational. I have included these three videos below. Highly recommended.

Transactional Analysis 1: ego states & basic transactions

Transactional Analysis 2: games

Transactional Analysis 3: gimmicks

Dr Eric Berne first published the theories on TA just over fifty years ago. More information can be found here:

The saga of “Officer Bubbles” continues…

It was great that the incident was caught on camera. Cameras are a wonderful tool as they help in fighting abuse of power.

I do wonder, though, how many other such incidents have not been caught on camera…

Actually, this isn’t so much a discussion on why religion does or does not deserve special privileges, but rather it’s just my way of gently introducing two YouTube channels related to atheism and religion. But I will say this, and which I’ve mentioned briefly in another article, religion does not deserve any special privileges; it is not immune to criticism and I will object to any laws or “politically correct” influences that seek to protect religion or not cause “offence”. Any “offences” that religious people feel, I think, may be the result of a deep split within their personalities where their rational-self is trying to get to the surface but is pushed back down by the irrational-self. This battle probably goes unnoticed by the person but if they really thought about it they may perhaps know that there’s something not quite right. And rather than explore and understand and admit that they are wrong they, instead, lash out at the external, the rationalists, the critical thinkers. They want this nice, cosy world that they’ve built around themselves and are afraid to venture out, afraid to grow-up, afraid to confront reality. This may be something that will form part of a rather longer article but I fear that I may just end up repeating some, if not all, of the points made by Richard Dawkins in “The God Delusion”. But I do still think that it may be a worthwhile activity to see where it leads me; I may even be surprised! However, I digress.

I came across these two YouTube channels and really enjoyed them. Some may be offended. Tough.

If you’ve read some of my articles or explored the links on this blog, you’re likely to have come across the site What’s The Harm? which details the harm caused seeking medical treatment based on homeopathy, superstitions, faith healing, witchcraft, fairy tales and other pseudosciences. In short, a failure to think critically.

There are a couple of YouTube videos that explain how homeopathy lead to the death of a baby, and which also explain the use of proper clinical trials.

Here are links to my blog articles about homeopathic harm:

This video from DarkMatter2525 at http://www.youtube.com/user/DarkMatter2525#p/u/6/zIwiU7thK54 has been out for a while but I wanted to add it here as it has a lot of synergy with NonStampCollector’s video on “http://www.metalvortex.com/images/Misc%20Photos/Snow%20in%20London%202009/index.html)” which I had linked to only just recently.

Now and again I may link or embed a video from NonStampCollector. For those that don’t know, NonStampCollector has his own YouTube channel.

In this post, I’m linking to NonStampCollector’s video on “Jephthah (Judges 11)”.

On a slightly different tack, I’m looking forward to having more lively debates with Jehovah’s Witnesses knocking on my door, but as of late they don’t seem to come around any more ;)
