A trip in May 2004 to the Himalayan regions of India (Darjeeling), Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet.
Travelling overland from India, the first attempt to cross into Nepal was postponed due to a strike called by the Maoist rebels. So we tried again the next day; following discussions with the border guards who gave us the all clear, this second attempt got us across the border into Nepal. We had originally wanted to head for an airport near the border which would allow us to take a flight to Kathmandu but the airport was closed; we therefore travelled about 100 km to an alternative airport. However, just 20 km short of this airport there was a battle between Maoist rebels and government forces so we had to run back over the border to India. Damn! The third attempt to get into Nepal was to fly to Delhi and get a flight to Kathmandu. Unfortunately there was a general strike due to the Indian elections, and flights were generally running very late so we had many hours of waiting around in Delhi. But we were successful! The reward was a stay at the wonderful Yak & Yeti Hotel in Kathmandu.
