South America Trip – August 2002

South America 2002 Photos

Apart from being mosquito food, I've dodged car bombs and mortar attacks in Colombia (President’s inauguration and all that!), been told to back‑off by armed security forces (hey, that was only a camera I was holding!), been to Machu Picchu, overland to Lake Titicaca, travelled onto the Andes backbone (over 4,335 breathless metres above sea level...coca leaves helped though!), cruised and fished on the Amazon River (caught piranha using bits of chicken as bait...excellent!), trekked through the Amazon jungle (it was wet here even though it's the dry season...blame El Nino...I guess it's called a “rain‑forest” for a reason!), went without electricity for a few days (not easy for a gadget freak...withdrawal symptoms!), no hot water (just the stuff from the river!), spent hours llama‑watching in the Andes (I swear those llamas were posing for my camera!), been frozen in the mountains, been fried in the jungle, eaten guinea‑pig (yikes!), been attacked by termites, dodged deadly ants, been eaten more by mosquitoes (I need surgery after this!), seen the magnificent Iguazu (Iguassu) Falls, got mugged by four dudes in Rio de Janeiro (painful...cuts and bruises...I definitely need surgery!), travelled across the continent from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic via bus, train, boat and plane through Colombia, Peru, Argentina and Brazil, plus loads more. A fantastic trip!
